Engineers who need to deploy models on several hardware platforms or academics who wish to test out various frameworks for training and deploying their models may find this extremely helpful.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"082e\" class=\"ya yb st be yc mb yd mc mf mg ye mh mk ml yf mm mp mq yg mr mu mv yh mw mz yi bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Benefits of Using ONNX<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li id=\"4748\" class=\"yj yk st be b th yl ym yn tk yo yp yq ml zg ys yt mq zh yv yw mv zi yy yz za zj zk zl bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Interoperability: ONNX allows developers to switch between frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Caffe2 without trouble. In the <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">__init__()<\/code> method, I have initialized two fully connected layers, where the first layer has an input size of 28*28 and 100 output units, and the second layer has 100 input units and 10 output units.<\/p>\n<p id=\"45bb\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th zb ym yn tk zc yp yq ml zd ys yt mq ze yv yw mv zf yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In the <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">forward()<\/code> method contains the forward pass of the neural network. It accepts an input tensor <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">x<\/code> and applies the <strong class=\"be fs\">ReLU <\/strong>activation function after passing through the first layer. Then, it uses the <strong class=\"be fs\">Softmax <\/strong>activation function after passing through the second layer and returns the <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">x<\/code> tensor as the output.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"0dac\" class=\"ya yb st be yc mb yd mc mf mg ye mh mk ml yf mm mp mq yg mr mu mv yh mw mz yi bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Step 3:<\/h2>\n<pre class=\"xk xl xm xn xo zw zx zy bo zz ba bj\"><span id=\"f876\" class=\"aba yb st zx b bf abb abc l abd abe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"hljs-keyword\">import<\/span> torch.onnx\n\ndummy_input = torch.randn(<span class=\"hljs-number\">1<\/span>, <span class=\"hljs-number\">28<\/span>*<span class=\"hljs-number\">28<\/span>)\nonnx_filename = <span class=\"hljs-string\">\"simple_test_model.onnx\"<\/span>\n\ntorch.onnx.export(model, dummy_input, onnx_filename, verbose=<span class=\"hljs-literal\">True<\/span>, input_names=[<span class=\"hljs-string\">'input'<\/span>], output_names=[<span class=\"hljs-string\">'output'<\/span>])<\/span><\/pre>\n<p id=\"509f\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th zb ym yn tk zc yp yq ml zd ys yt mq ze yv yw mv zf yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In this step, we import the <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">torch.onnx<\/code>package for ONNX conversion. We create a <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">dummy_input<\/code>, which is a random tensor. The input tensor is expected to be of size (1, 28*28), where 1 represents the batch size and 28*28 is the input dimension.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0691\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th zb ym yn tk zc yp yq ml zd ys yt mq ze yv yw mv zf yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">We then define the name of the ONNX model file as <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">simple_test_model.onnx<\/code>. The <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">torch.onnx.export()<\/code> function is used to convert the PyTorch model to ONNX format and save it in the file.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"abi abj abk\"><p id=\"6063\" class=\"yj yk abl be b th zb ym yn tk zc yp yq abm zd ys yt abn ze yv yw abo zf yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">input_names<\/code> and <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">output_names<\/code> arguments are optional but help identify the input and output tensors when using the ONNX model later.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"b63e\" class=\"ya yb st be yc mb yd mc mf mg ye mh mk ml yf mm mp mq yg mr mu mv yh mw mz yi bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Step 4:<\/h2>\n<pre class=\"xk xl xm xn xo zw zx zy bo zz ba bj\"><span id=\"4bdf\" class=\"aba yb st zx b bf abb abc l abd abe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">pip install onnxruntime<\/span><\/pre>\n<p id=\"aba3\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th zb ym yn tk zc yp yq ml zd ys yt mq ze yv yw mv zf yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This above command will install the ONNX runtime, ONNX Runtime is a high-performance, cross-platform library for running ONNX standard models on various devices and platforms or languages.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"xk xl xm xn xo zw zx zy bo zz ba bj\"><span id=\"9c08\" class=\"aba yb st zx b bf abb abc l abd abe\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"hljs-keyword\">import<\/span> onnxruntime <span class=\"hljs-keyword\">as<\/span> ort\n<span class=\"hljs-keyword\">import<\/span> numpy <span class=\"hljs-keyword\">as<\/span> np\n\nORT_session = ort.InferenceSession(onnx_filename)\n\n<span class=\"hljs-keyword\">def<\/span> <span class=\"hljs-title.function\">run_model<\/span>(<span class=\"hljs-params\">input_data<\/span>):\n    input_data = input_data.astype(np.float32)\n    input_name = ORT_session.get_inputs()[<span class=\"hljs-number\">0<\/span>].name\n    output_name = ORT_session.get_outputs()[<span class=\"hljs-number\">0<\/span>].name\n    result = ORT_session.run([output_name], {input_name: input_data})\n    <span class=\"hljs-keyword\">return<\/span> result[<span class=\"hljs-number\">0<\/span>]\n\n<span class=\"hljs-comment\"># Define your input data, for example, a random tensor<\/span>\ninput_data = np.random.randn(<span class=\"hljs-number\">1<\/span>, <span class=\"hljs-number\">28<\/span>*<span class=\"hljs-number\">28<\/span>)\n\n<span class=\"hljs-comment\"># Get output<\/span>\noutput = run_model(input_data)\n<span class=\"hljs-built_in\">print<\/span>(output)<\/span><\/pre>\n<p id=\"da6b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th zb ym yn tk zc yp yq ml zd ys yt mq ze yv yw mv zf yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I have created an inference session using the saved ONNX model using the file name. Then, I created a function that first casts the input data type to <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">float32<\/code> because it is necessary for ONNX Runtime. Finally, we can run the model using the <code class=\"ef abf abg abh zx b\">ORT_session.run()<\/code> and get the result.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5791\" class=\"ya yb st be yc mb yd mc mf mg ye mh mk ml yf mm mp mq yg mr mu mv yh mw mz yi bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Comparative Analysis<\/h2>\n<p id=\"5bae\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th yl ym yn tk yo yp yq ml yr ys yt mq yu yv yw mv yx yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">By examining the above example, we can better understand some of the benefits ONNX provides.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8f9f\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th zb ym yn tk zc yp yq ml zd ys yt mq ze yv yw mv zf yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It provides interoperability by supporting various deep-learning frameworks, allowing models to be converted from frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow. In the above code, we converted the PyTorch model to ONNX format.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5b9e\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th zb ym yn tk zc yp yq ml zd ys yt mq ze yv yw mv zf yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">ONNX enables easy deployment for models across various platforms and programming languages. In the above code, we ran the ONNX model using the ONNX Runtime library, which is available for different platforms. In my personal experience, I have converted a TensorFlow model to an ONNX model and deployed it on a NodeJS server using the ONNX Runtime library.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0da5\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th zb ym yn tk zc yp yq ml zd ys yt mq ze yv yw mv zf yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">ONNX Runtime is designed to provide optimized execution of models, both static and dynamic optimization. As shown in the code above, running inference with ONNX Runtime capitalizes on these optimizations to offer faster, low-latency inference than running the model directly in the training framework. This results in better resource utilization and efficient model deployments.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"c26d\" class=\"ya yb st be yc mb yd mc mf mg ye mh mk ml yf mm mp mq yg mr mu mv yh mw mz yi bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p id=\"fa07\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph yj yk st be b th yl ym yn tk yo yp yq ml yr ys yt mq yu yv yw mv yx yy yz za er bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">ONNX: An indispensable asset for AI developers that provides unmatched flexibility in selecting tools based on individual requirements while ensuring utmost compatibility, portability, and performance.
