Be sure to follow Harpreet Sahota on those channels to tune in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But also, don&#8217;t be shy! These events are free to attend, and there&#8217;s always room to ask question you might have, jump into the conversation, and learn from your fellow data scientists and machine learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, the group covered another range of interesting topics, but I&#8217;m going to focus on three threads here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An exploration of what has drawn us to the fields of data science and machine learning<\/li>\n<li>A discussion centered on how focusing too much on communicating &#8220;business impacts&#8221; via your resume can be distract from the core strengths of your portfolio work<\/li>\n<li>And something a bit more philosophical\u2014tips and practices for boosting creativity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As a reminder, we\u2019d love to see any and all of you at these hourlong sessions\u2014so feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/comet-ml.zoom.us\/meeting\/register\/tZItf-urrzMoE9N-HWSIK68qfI1eDB_jlUeN\">register for upcoming Office Hours sessions here<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, there&#8217;s a lot more in the full session (which you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLx-pFw_ty92xOXILXTml4XXitsyu59Gr6\">find on Harpreet&#8217;s YouTube channel<\/a>), so be sure to check it out, alongside all of Harpeet&#8217;s other excellent content.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What draws you to data science and machine learning?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Harpreet kicked things off with a round-robin discussion topic for the group that really dug to the core of why we all attend these sessions (and others like it). Here&#8217;s a quick list summarizing a few of the reasons provided, but be sure to check out the full clip for some of the reasoning and insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A real-world application for interest and skill in math<\/li>\n<li>Predicting the future and having people take actions based on those predictions<\/li>\n<li>A strong and vibrant community<\/li>\n<li>The technical and creative challenges the field offers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Comet ML Office Hours (7.11.21): Why are you interested in Machine Learning?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GPtJk3_kv4Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data science resumes and the importance of communicating &#8220;business impacts&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With evidence mounting that many data science projects fail, and that extracting business value out of these projects takes a lot of strategic planning and execution across teams, there seems to be an increased focus on job seekers being able to prove that they understand how to communicate the potential business impacts of their DS\/ML work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it&#8217;s certainly true that communicating about what you do\u2014and tying that communication to how these projects affect an organizations KPIs or other bottom-line metrics\u2014narrowing your project portfolio&#8217;s focus too much on metrics like revenue generation can actually detract from your candidacy.
