{"id":2406,"date":"2021-07-07T16:57:48","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T00:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/live-cometml.pantheonsite.io\/blog\/comet-office-hours-recap-for-july-4-2021\/"},"modified":"2021-07-07T16:57:48","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T00:57:48","slug":"comet-office-hours-recap-for-july-4-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.comet.com\/site\/blog\/comet-office-hours-recap-for-july-4-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Comet Office Hours: Recap for July 4, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Welcome to another recap of the Comet ML Office Hours, powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/theartistsofdatascience.fireside.fm\/\">The Artists of Data Science<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This past weekend was a holiday in the U.S., but that didn&#8217;t stop Harpreet and the rest of the group from showing up and chatting about some really interesting topics in the world of data science and machine learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I wasn&#8217;t able to attend (I actually decided to schedule a move into a new apartment on Sunday), I really enjoyed reviewing the session, and I&#8217;ve pulled out a couple highlights that struck me\u2014an interesting applied use case, some advice for DS interviewing, and some technical advice on selecting and tuning hyperparameters (with the help of Comet ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a reminder, we\u2019d love to see any and all of you at these hourlong sessions\u2014so feel free to <a href=\"https:\/\/comet-ml.zoom.us\/meeting\/register\/tZItf-urrzMoE9N-HWSIK68qfI1eDB_jlUeN\">register for upcoming Office Hours sessions here<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, there&#8217;s a lot more in the full session (which you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLx-pFw_ty92xOXILXTml4XXitsyu59Gr6\">find on Harpreet&#8217;s YouTube channel<\/a>), so be sure to check it out, alongside all of Harpeet&#8217;s other excellent content.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applied ML for small-scale, precision agriculture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While I <em>love<\/em> all the philosophical and epistemological conversations we tend to have during these Office Hours, I was excited to hear this week&#8217;s conversation about a really interesting and applied use case for machine learning\u2014<strong>precision agriculture for small-scale farming.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gillreema\/\">Reema Gill<\/a> was kind enough to intro and summarize a project she and her team are working on. Essentially, it&#8217;s an autonomous, sensor-based irrigation system that also relies on satellite data to optimize irrigation patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll let Reema and the group take it from there (see the clip below), but it was cool to learn about one of the ways ML systems can be applied to help solve big social and economic challenges.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Comet ML Office Hours (7.4.21): Applied ML for Small-Farmer Precision Agriculture\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l_RIKQaiMCU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips and resources for data science &#8220;coding interviews&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In software engineering, job interview processes almost always include some sort of hands-on coding challenge\u2014whether live, take-home, or a hybrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same is also true for data science roles. In this clip, the group helps differentiate DS coding interviews from what software engineers experience. Additionally, they highlighted some really helpful resources to prepare for these technical interviews, which I&#8217;ve listed below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackerrank.com\/\">HackerRank<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/leetcode.com\/\">Leet Code<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.finxter.com\/\">Finxter<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pythonprinciples.com\/\">Python Principles<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Comet ML Office Hours (7.4.21): Data Science Coding Interviews\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3jXJAiAgoyA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selecting and Tuning Hyperparameters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the applied use case and the job seeker conversations, we also had a bit of technical discussion in this past week&#8217;s session\u2014specifically centered on how to approach hyperparameter selection and tuning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the problem at hand was tuning an object detection for a Kaggle competition, some of the advice given rings true for a general approach to hyperparameter tuning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with a pre-trained model architecture when possible, and adjust from there (in this case, YOLO with a DenseNet backbone)<\/li>\n<li>Tune one hyperparameter at a time, and then review the resulting model results\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.comet.com\/team-comet-ml\/parameter-optimizations\/reports\/advanced-ml-parameter-optimization\">this is where an experiment management tool like Comet comes into play<\/a>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out the clip below for more tips and discussion on this essential technical problem when building performant ML models.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Comet ML Office Hours (7.4.21): Selecting and Tuning Hyperparameters\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UTZMRccweGY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enjoy the Conversations Above?
