While there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLx-pFw_ty92xOXILXTml4XXitsyu59Gr6\">plenty more to be had in the full recordings<\/a>, this recap focuses on a few topics that generated some of the most interesting conversations. Enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">May 23, 2021<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dealing with the frustration of data science projects that \u201cfail\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Anamaria Huluba kicked things off with a really poignant line of questioning: Given that industry data suggests more than 80% of Data Science projects fail, how can individual practitioners cope with and react to the idea of failure, especially when they\u2019re just getting started.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plenty of valuable insights here, but here a couple that stood out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clearly defining failure can help you scope out your project more effectively\u2014and help you ward off personal feelings of inadequacy<\/li>\n<li>Similarly, starting with well-defined questions about your project\u2014what you\u2019re doing, why you\u2019re doing it, the methods you\u2019ll use\u2014can give important clarity to your approach<\/li>\n<li>The nature of the data will impact how you define failure and establish your central project questions: Often, it will be much easier to work with data currently being collected as opposed to troves of likely messy data that have already been collected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out the full clip below for a deeper look at this discussion:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Comet Office Hours: Dealing with the frustration of Data Science projects that fail\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/juZLDV4eOkg?list=PLX9GmL8cVn_wPEkqOyFQv77UZWzdBDbni\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Re-examining the future of the Data Science profession<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, we\u2019ve all seen the explosion of interest in Data Science, not only as a field that can help operationalize data to help solve difficult problems, but also in the proliferation of training programs, courses, degree programs, and other educational resources designed to help democratize the foundational skills needed to work in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A really interesting conversation broke out this past week regarding this presumed truth, with a number of different (and in some cases surprising) perspectives. Here are a couple of the sub-areas that were tackled within this discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The future of Data Science as a profession\u2014generalists vs domain expertise: This debate centered on whether the job title \u201cData Scientist\u201d will largely even exist in 20 years. On the contrary, will domain experts become equipped with basic DS knowledge and easy-to-use tools that make the generalist obsolete?
